There are a few Adjustment layers that can help out while editing images. Solid Color & Photo Filter recreate some beautiful soft light effects, when combined with the "Screen" blend mode you can really take control.

Sharpening

Adding a simple High Pass Filter enables you to sharpen the image, completely transforming it sharpening & making key areas stand out. Change the blend mode to overlay and adjust the opacity accordingly.
