do photographers need insurance

Do Photographers Need Insurance? – FAQ

Public Liability & Public Indemnity Unraveled.

I speak to a lot of photographers, some do have insurance some don't. It all boils down to the line of work to which you are involved in, if you are a simple hobbyist taking a few snaps for friends and family on a non commercial basis then insurance is not required. If you partake in paid work then you will almost always need to have insurance.

Getting insurance isn’t always simple though.

In a market full of money grabbers i would personally recommend approaching brokers with caution. Remember that they only have access to the same tools as you ( Google ) so while using a price comparison site or a broker may get the job done quicker and cheaper than the market average, bear in mind that everybody along the food chain has to be paid and in this case you are the chef looking to offer a cheap healthy option only. If you use either of these methods to obtain insurance then get a quote then go to the insurance provider and run a quote direct with them, you will be surprised at how much cheaper it is to go direct.

color lookup photoshop

Color Lookup Adjustments In Photoshop

Photoshop Photography, Applying Color Lookup To Enhance Images

Essentially color lookup is an adjustment layer within Photoshop used to select individual colors and re map them, completely transforming the look and feel of the image according to each preset. In human language that translates to a filter similar to those built into smartphone camera apps & Instagram. Here's the difference though, Color Lookup allows you to take full control of your images and choose from a professional range of built in filters which are guaranteed to make those colors pop. You can stack multiple images together and edit them all in the same way & see changes across multiple images real time.

What is 3DLUT?

Color Range uses a 3D LUT file to determine the colors of the image to affect, corresponding to the preset it is applying. This has been a method commonly used throughout the film industry to make every cut of every scene have a certain feel to it. Think about it, every scene cant use just one or two cameras, nor will each camera produce exactly the same results. As is the common denominator with true art, it is near impossible to replicate. A 3D Lookup Table is the cheat sheet in this case providing a one for all preset where all of the cuts can be processed, exactly the same. If you are getting started with image editing or you just want to pick up a few more tips then definitely check out how Color Lookup works because 3D LUT is a big part of the commercial editing world and could prove a very useful skill.

Soft Light, probably the best blend mode available in Adobe Photoshop. I speak to a lot of Photographers online and when asked about their opinion of soft light, around 75% had used it before. There were a few who religiously stick by soft light & use it on almost all of their images, so it must be good for something right? The short answer is yes if it is used alongside other blend modes such as linear light and overlay. The great thing is you can adjust lighting easily using these four key blend modes, Overlay, Soft Light, Linear Light & Color Burn. If you ever wondered how Photographers create that "glossy" look then these key blend modes are undoubtedly involved in post process editing. Photoshop CC 2015, Camera Raw #2

Photoshoot Correction, Smoothing & Vignettes.

Picture the scene, you have just finished what you deem to be a successful photoshoot, the client seems happy and you feel that you have taken a sufficient number of diverse interesting pictures. Upon review you feel that maybe the colors don't pop enough, maybe the lights could have been a little different or the model just does't suit a particular pose. This is why Camera Raw in Photoshop is a gift from the gods, nowadays most high end cameras will be able to perform a lot of the effects possible in Camera Raw, within the actual camera. (Chances are these type of cameras will also shoot in RAW too which is even better.) Nonetheless if you shoot in JPEG or don't get the perfect shot in camera you can really change the feel of an image in just a few clicks within Camera Raw.

In the tutorial i really wanted to emphasize the effect, obviously this is aimed more towards people who are creating dramatic marketing or promotional images. Take a look at the three final edits below to show how camera raw can help create a softer look too, using a lesser noise reduction to smooth the textures nicely. It really goes to show that even with a camera that doesn't break the bank, you can create professional images. The only other recommendation i would make is shooting with as plain a background as possible as camera raw will heavily affect the background if you are really changing the dynamics of your images.

double exposure photoshop tutorial

Double Exposure – Camera vs Photoshop

What's The Difference?

In photography terms this effect is known as a "multiple exposure" or the process used to combine two separate images together to create one image, this will be referred to as analogue. In Photoshop the same effect can be achieved by manually combining two separate images together using layer masking & level adjustments. This is known as a "double exposure" and will be referred to as digital.

multiple exposure nikon d7000

Camera: Nikon D7000

Images: Chris Melton

As you can see from these shots, you don't need to have a studio full of expensive equipment to achieve stunning results.

multiple exposure nikon d7000

Analogue

The way a camera creates a multiple exposure is simply multiple "shutters" of the camera shutter, this creates more than one exposure then the camera works its magic and produces a beautiful multiple exposure. Not all cameras can achieve this effect but some of the models which can are;  Pretty much all Nikon DSLRs, Fujifilms  X Pro1 and X100 range and Canon - EOS 5D Mark 3, 1D X, and 70D.

Myself as a Photoshop enthusiast, graphic & web designer, not to mention an under developed photographer (no pun intended) found that sometimes you can be quite limited with the range of effects a camera can offer. For a point and shoot professional who needs stunning results quickly then i would say that doing things "in camera" is the best way. If a camera creates the exposure the same way and you show that to 100 different clients who all don't know each other then range of exposure effects doesn't matter.

Images: Skandy Tutorials

I created these images in around 15 minutes, have a look at the tutorial i made below to see how easy it is.

multiple exposure nikon d7000
multiple exposure nikon d7000
multiple exposure nikon d7000

Digital

With the range of effects Photoshop has to offer there comes a consequence, time. Without knowledge of layers, layer masking, adjustment layers levels & curves Photoshop would be no more use than scribbling lines in paint then using the paint bucket tool to fill them with different colors. Surely i am not the only one that used to do this? For me i prefer to play around with images and have full control hence why i would always be bias towards Photoshop. You can produce 100 different double exposures using the same two images and even if you tried to replicate the last exposure, chances are it would come out differently.

You need a camera in the first place though and to be fair Photoshop is not the best program for working with low resolution images so the fundamentals of a good camera are always a main factor. In conclusion, have fun play around with the two. Photoshop will always be the cheaper option and a great place to practice and hone your skills.

Take Better Pictures With Your Smartphone

6 Tricks to make smartphone images pop.

I-Phone, Android, HTC, Nokia and all the other smartphone providers may be in fierce competition with each other, as the consumer we will benefit heavily from cheaper higher tech handsets. By higher tech i mean specifically the camera, take the S6 for example , boasting its 16 MP camera it pretty much cancels out most lower end standalone cameras. I have a 16 MP Nikon that i paid over £250 a few years ago and that is just a camera. It seems almost as if camera phones add another 4 mega pixels every year and god knows what the future holds. Watch the video below to learn 6 of my all time favourite smartphone photography tips and tricks.

Extra Tip

Try plugging in your headphones and use them as a shutter. Simply by pressing the plus you can take quick multiple images at the click of a finger. If you are brave enough to place your phone in a higher position or somewhere where you can't click "snap" then the headphones method is perfect!

How To Create a Professional Watermark

Visually watermarks need to be as less intrusive as possible, the idea here is to protect yourself and your images whilst promoting your brand but without ruining the beauty of the image. Follow along with me in the video below and i will show you how to create a custom watermark in Photoshop.

I Recently spoke To a Wedding Photographer, Here's What He Said.

Watermarking images for him is a positive because when friends, family and associates see the photographs, they instantly associate him with the people featured and would be more likely to use him in the future. ( he has actually gained more work by employing this marketing technique ) Reasonable point. "It all boils down to taste at the end of the day, photographers who do it for the love of it will generally not watermark their images whereas a strategic shrewd business minded photographer would. The line of work can shift the advantages and disadvantages of having a watermark but its better to have one than not right?"

Long Exposure, The Short Way

4 Top Tips For Long Exposure

No longer do we have to think of a photograph as a still image, to breathe more life into our images we try new, savvy, creative ways and Long Exposure is one of them. The beauty of it all lies in motion, running water such as a river or even a waterfall for the more adept will look like a beautiful mist when using Long Exposure. Lighting in motion such as cars appear as beautiful lines and streaks, the top and bottom of it is Long Exposure is wonderful and here are 4 tips to sharpen your long exposure sword.

1. Stability Is Key

Whilst there are 744 different ways to hold a camera, standing, sitting some even lying down, when it comes to Long Exposure the only way to go is either have a very sturdy tripod and surface or set the camera down somewhere stable where there will be no movement at all. Because the photographs are taken over a period of a few shorts seconds any movement will mean the destruction of your shot. Always remember that no tripod means no safety, god knows what could happen so stay safe but keep the camera still.

2. Be Weary Of Shutter Release

Manual shutter release can cause an unwanted shake whilst trying to create long exposure, sometimes even with a tripod so to be 100% safe there are a few tricks to employ to ensure guaranteed shutter stability.

The first is to set a 2 second delay on the camera so by the picture is taken the shutter has already snapped thus removing any unwanted movement.

The second technique is to purchase a remote shutter release. These are really useful as they can be connected either via a cable or wireless so when the shutter does snap you are ensuring that there is no wobble, and no wobble means no blur right?

3. Steer Clear From Auto Focus

download free photoshop plugins 1

Now don't get me wrong, auto focus is fantastic in 96.7% of situations but not Long Exposure. When you are working in an environment that is considered "low light" the auto focus can sometimes struggle focusing. Remember that the camera is still so most of the shot will also remain still. Use manual focus to hone in on the perfect shot and then let the camera do the rest.

Also bear in mind that if you are using ND filters they can cause the same problems.

The best solution i have found is using a light and setting the focus mode to auto focus, once the picture is crisp turn off the light and begin shooting. This guarantees that once the light is off the focus will remain the sharp.

4. Use Aperture

By closing the aperture down, you are basically enabling the camera to shoot longer. If the aperture is too small though then you will see a dramatic loss of sharpness and this is due to diffraction.

in 90% of cameras the best aperture to go for is around 5.6 - 8. Have a play around within these ranges to find out what works best for you. You will find that usually any images outside of this aperture will come out fuzzy or blurry. Remember this is Long Exposure and the elusive is always beautiful.

6 Photography Tricks & Tips For The Photographer At Heart

A large proportion of our readers classify themselves as beginners, professional photographers are always looking for new photography tips too suggesting we have a tendency to always try something once. This article collates a bunch of useful information that even the most seasoned of Photographers may find useful..

Understanding Exposure

1. What Is It?  -
In photographic terms, exposure is the amount of light which reaches the camera. By varying this, different exposure effects can be achieved.

Exposure usually refers to or is affected by the camera shutter cycle and achieving the right exposure could be compared to fishing. Whereas the outcome is uncontrollable, and we will always persist for the sheer love of it.  3 factors stay within your grasp: the equipment you use, the time you spend doing it, and the position where you sit. you simply have to be compelled to make sure you do not go home empty handed "underexposure", or you try to reel in a whale, breaking the line and end up missing the opportunity to fish again today "overexposure".

The secret is that there are many angles, shutter speed adjustment and amounts which will help you accomplish this.

So in photography terms, its not always about quantity but quality. Always think before you snap, select the right time of day, check the sunrise and sunset times, take a couple of each shot if you can and collaborate with like minded photographers to share exposure ideas.

Don't Let a Tripod Trip You

2. What are the common misconceptions?  - In photographic terms, a sturdy hand fails miserably against a sturdy tripod, creating effects such as long exposure is impossible without one and cheap is certainly not cheerful.

If the tripod passes the living room test, ie: a couple of cool shots of the kids on the couch. It doesn't necessarily mean that it will be any use outdoors, remember that some of the best photographers in the world will use bigger tripods as they can sit comfortably in wind, on uneven, wet and generally dodgy ground. It's your pride and joy that is sat on the top of it and for it to fall and bang it's head, well, that is unimaginable. Obviously for new shooters the first big spend will be a camera and make sure the second is a tripod as it opens up a whole new world of opportunity and looks so much more professional.

Live For The Golden Hour

3. What Is It?  - The period of time when the sun is lower in the sky and shooting with indirect light only is possible.

As the sun is nearest to the horizon the legendary photography golden hour starts to tick down, albeit lasting slightly longer or lesser depending on where you live on mother earth. The golden hour begins when the intensity of direct light is less than during the "middle" period of the day. The indirect light luminosity is what creates the effect coupled with the height of the sun in the sky.

You can always expect much less contrast in your images, really powerful highlights and a greater range of shadows. Plus the glow from the sun can create some really rich color tones.

Three Is The Magic Number

4. How Does It Work?  - In photographic terms, a compilation of three may that be subjects, colors, or shots always using three or odd numbers will almost certainly always produce better results.

If you are lucky enough to have continuous drive mode on your camera, then using this instead of single frames is always a must for great shots. By having a multitude of pictures all taken virtually at the same time, you will increase the chances of capturing the desired outcome. Plus you may not have noticed before that an image is blurred and once in editor mode, the moment would have already passed. Take a burst of 3 shots at a time covering as many angles as possible.

By rule of thumb having three is the best way to go but try applying that method to a bride and groom only photo, i'm sure nobody wants to see the mother in law in those.

Get To Grips With Photoshop & Lightroom

5. How can they help?  - In photographic terms, learning at least the basics of Adobe Photoshop and Light room is essential.

Firstly we specialize in Photoshop and image editing and if you would like to learn online for free then click here. Albeit difficult and strenuous at times there is just so much more that you can do in these two programs than raw image shooting alone. Photoshop especially was built for photographers, image editors and designers alike so getting to grips with it is definitely worth it. Especially while on paid projects, just a small adjustment of curves or adding an action can make the difference between a client recommending you to all of their friends or just being generally happy with the work you did.

Utilize Aperture Mode (AP)

5. What is It?  - In photographic terms, on a camera dial, is the preset on photography cameras that allows you to choose a value with the camera selecting an appropriate shutter speed.

Selecting the "A" or "AP" mode on your camera dial lets you access depth of field, the aperture of an image is defined by "F-Stops" you will notice that as the aperture is wider the corresponding number will be lower. To put it into simple terms, wider apertures decrease the depth of the image resulting in the background being blurred out and the front subject clearer.
